Thor Broadcast powers ultra-low-latency IPTV and replay distribution in modern sports stadiums, delivering synchronized HD video, instant replay, graphics, and ad channels to hundreds or thousands of displays. Using multi-channel SDI/HDMI encoders, multicast-optimized networking, and zero-latency SDI fiber transport, the solution ensures clean switching between live feeds and replays, centralized monitoring, and reliable venue-wide playback.

Modern sports stadiums present one of the most demanding environments for video distribution. Fans expect synchronized, low-latency, high-definition video across hundreds or thousands of displays, covering concourses, suites, restaurants, field-level screens, clubs, and press areas. The system must not only mirror the live broadcast feed but also integrate instant replay, scoreboard graphics, camera angles, and advertising channels, each available as independent IPTV multicast streams.

A typical stadium includes

  • 8–32 live SDI camera sources (3G-SDI or 12G-SDI)
  • Scoreboard and replay systems with ST-2110 or SDI outputs
  • IPTV distribution network with thousands of endpoints
  • Dedicated operations control rooms
  • Fiber links running between camera positions, production trucks, and the stadium control center

Thor Broadcast systems are typically deployed as the backbone of these IPTV and replay networks. A stadium configuration frequently begins with Thor’s multi-channel SDI encoders, capable of ingesting SDI and HDMI from replay servers, broadcast switchers, cameras, and graphics engines. Each encoder channel is configured for ultra-low latency H.264 or H.265, with GOP reduction, high-profile encoding, and transport-stream optimization to ensure playback synchronization.

Low Latency Is Critical

In a stadium, the difference between acceptable performance and failure can be measured in milliseconds. If displays located above the seating area lag behind real-time action, fans notice immediately. Therefore, Thor Broadcast encoders are configured to operate with:

  • Reduced GOP length
  • CBR (constant bitrate) control
  • High-priority packet scheduling
  • Under 200–400 ms end-to-end latency

The encoded multicast streams are injected into the stadium’s IPTV VLAN. This VLAN is typically configured with:

  • IGMP Snooping on all switches
  • IGMP Querier on core routers
  • VLAN segmentation to isolate IPTV load
  • 10GbE uplinks to prevent flooding

Because multicast traffic in a stadium can include 20–50 live channels simultaneously, optimized IGMP behavior is essential to avoid network flooding that could cause replay room delays or display freezes. Thor Broadcast decoders, placed behind TVs or integrated with commercial monitors, subscribe to the required multicast groups via remote management.

Replay Workflow Integration

A stadium’s replay workflow typically consists of EVS or similar servers outputting SDI. Thor’s SDI encoders accept these feeds, encode them with minimal latency, and deliver them as independent IPTV channels. This allows operators to switch instantly between:

  • Live broadcast feed
  • Alternate camera angles
  • End zone cameras
  • Sideline cams
  • High-frame-rate slow-motion replay

Because the encoders support accurate PCR/PTS timing, switching streams results in clean transitions with no delay artifacts.

Fiber Transport Requirements

Camera feeds, replay outputs, and scoreboard graphics may be located across large distances. Thor’s 3G and 12G SDI fiber extenders transport uncompressed SDI with zero latency across hundreds of meters or kilometers within the facility. CWDM solutions are often used to carry:

  • Multiple cameras on one fiber
  • Program return feeds
  • ISO camera feeds
  • Control data
  • Ethernet channels

This dramatically reduces fiber demands on stadium infrastructure.

Centralized Control & Monitoring

A stadium often includes more than 500 displays. Thor decoders allow centralized management including:

  • Channel selection
  • Firmware updates
  • Volume control
  • On/off scheduling
  • Emergency override channels

During emergencies, operators can override all displays simultaneously with safety announcements.
