Question and Answers

Question:
Do you have any HDMI to ASI converters?

Answer:
Yes, we do, the HDMI to ASI converter is actually MPEG2 or H.264 Video encoders https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-4-hdmi-to-qam-modulators-and-iptv-streaming-encoders-8230.html/12 HDMI-QAM-IPLL unit is an HDMI encoder and will output video to ASI We have also 2ch HDMI or 4 channel HDMI to ASI They take 2 or HDMI inputs, encoders it MPEG2 or H.264, in mux you can choose one TS or second or muxed together as MPTS on the ASI output. The units have also IPTV outputs, SMTP's or MPTS multicast / unicast - UPD, RTP, RTSP This is the link: https://thorbroadcast.com/product/2-hdmi-ypbpr-hd-digital-tv-modulator-qam-atsc-dvb-t-8230.html

Question:

We are still looking into your products. The one we are looking at is the 2ADHD and the 4ADHD. These allow for channel insertion on say… 9-1 and 9-3 correct? We are currently running individual modulators at some sites and are looking to start upgrading them and inserting more channels.

I could use some info on these so I can pass the specs and capabilities on to our electronic tech to look at.

Answer:
Yes, that is correct.
Only some of our modulators, typically the more high end models have those specific chipsets which allow multiple programs on a single RF channel / carrier.
So if you are looking to put at least 2 HD channels or perhaps 4 SD channels on the same RF carrier, then those would be the models you'd want to look at.
The 4ADHD is an advanced model and has more in depth and intuitive NMS Gui's that allow you to do that.
You just have to stay within the constraints of RF QAM bandwidth, and those units allow you to set the Mbps output per program.

All data sheets, manuals, and specs can be found on their independent webpages.

Question:

For the models that offer RF and IP output, what would the end-user receiver look like for the IP stream?  Could we allow users to view channels via a problem like VLC on a laptop or some app on a mobile device if they are on the same network?

Answer:

Yes, the encoder can output either UDP or RTP unicast or multicast streams, depending on your preference. For example, for CH 1 multicast IP streaming, the address is 224.2.2.2 on port 2234. On the VLC player, you can access this stream by typing the following syntax: udp://@224.2.2.2:2234. You can access that video anywhere on the LAN network if the IGMP protocol is enabled on the switches. You can also access it on any IP STB, like this one:

Question:

We have a client who has a large Cruise. ship that they purchased at the start of covid. The broadcast system is in a bad state and is in desperate need for improvement. Currently, everything is running on Composite through Blonder Toungue AMCM 860 modulators. We are looking to upgrade the system. Most TVs in the ship did not weather Covid and have now been replaced and hock with FHD/4k units.+We are looking to make the headend signal chain completely digital. For instance:Satellite decoder –> HDMI to NDI Converter -> NDI Seinna Digital Matrix -> RTSP stream -> RTSP to CATV RF -> distribution to tv’sThere are about 20 TV channels in total from various sources (Satellite, movie server, Ship Produced), but all will enter and leave Seinna as an RTSP feed. As this is a ship, replacements are not easy to supply. So we are looking for a system with a high degree of redundancy and backup. What products would you recommend for this?

Answer:

Thank you for your inquiry. I've reviewed your scenario and have a question:

What is the reason for needing to go from HDMI to NDI Converter -> NDI Sienna Digital Matrix -> RTSP stream -> RTSP to CATV RF?

Why can you not go directly from HDMI to CATV RF? I believe there are too many unnecessary steps in your current setup.

Using just HDMI modulators would be much less complex and more immune to failures.

Please take a look at this product and the accompanying simple application drawing, and let me know if that would work for you:

In case you Must to go RTSP to CATV RF, than we would need need to decode each RTSP sremm to HDMI anyway and use the same H-HDCOAX-8 modulator
We do not have ability to go directly from RTSP to CATV

We could do that if you would have UDP multicast streams using this unit : (but not RTSP)

Question:

I work for a commercial AV integrator and am looking for some insight into configuring one of your modulators. The project in particular is for a new senior living facility that we would like to integrate a local video feed from a camera into one of their channels via their Comcast cable TV. At the senior living facility's other existing location, they currently have a H-2ADHD-QAM-IP-LL that modulates an HDMI signal onto channel 918 of their residence's cable boxes. The facility configured the device prior to us taking them on as a client so all we did from a configuration standpoint was provide them with an HDMI source that modulated into the system. I have reached out to the local cable/internet provider Comcast and they said they no longer support this type of system. Is this something your hardware could fit for the application or is it being phased out by the cable TV providers?

Answer:
Our modulator generates CLEAR QAM (cable channels) that you can feed directly to the TV's tuners and scan for 'Cable.' The TV will find those channels. If you are still using Comcast STB's (Set-Top Boxes), then you need to contact Comcast and ask for the frequency and other parameters they programmed the STB's with for local channel insertion.
Without this information, we will not be able to set the modulator properly, as we need to match the settings of their equipment

Please contact Xfinity/Comcast Headend and ask the following questions:

What is the frequency they require to modulate?
Do they require VCT, if so:
What is the VCT, major and minor channel?
What is a Service ID?
What is the Video and PCR  PID? do they need to be the same or different PID's
What QAM ? QAM 64 or QAM 256??
Do they allow HD resolution like 720p/1080i? , ( some companies like
Comcast allows only 480i SD resolution on Some STB's)

What is the STB RF input power range in dbmv
If you have some Cable TV  technician or engineer or Headend contact
information, you can forward it to us, and we can try to find out for
you.

Question:

I am the IT Manager for Wings and Rings. We are a restaurant chain with around 60 locations in the US and Mexico. We have around 40 TVs in each of our locations, but don't currently have the infrastructure for IPTV.  I am wanting to know more about the content distribution system Thor products could provide and would be a best fit for this scenario. Thanks!

----------------------

How many channels would you like to have distributed? - I am thinking 10 DirectTV sources and 2 Streaming sources
What are the video sources? - STBs, DVD players, computers?  DirectTV boxes and streaming sources of some capacity. To show sports games on Peacock Sports Pass, you have to buy a device from UpShow. I imagine as streaming continues to expand, an AppleTV or Amazon Fire Stick will be required as a source.
What is the video source interface? - HDMI, SDI, Analog AV? HDMI and Coax
Do you currently have those 40 TVs connected over Coax? - Yes, they are connected through coax and HDMI.
Do you currently have those 40 TVs connected over Ethernet LAN? - Sort of. The cat5 has been split for IR control of TVs.

Control4 was originally installed throughout most of our locations in our system, but that is typically for residential solutions and not commercial. Currently, each TV has a DirectTV box behind it that is connected via HDMI and coax and controlled through Control4. Cat5 has been ran but only for IR control of the TVs.

We have one location with IP based TVs using Just Add Power transmitters and receivers but have had consistent issues in the location since it was installed in 2020 (black screens, receivers not responding, trouble remotely powering TVs on and off.)

The dream solution we are trying to provide to our stores is an up-to-date AV stack that is simple to control, reliable, and affordable. We do not use menu boarding or anything of that nature currently due to the capacity of Control4 but would like to look into it.

Answer:

We have several ways to distribute videos over IP, Coax, or fiber.

in your case, a simle CATV RF distribution would be the best choice.

For 10-12 channels, you could use 8 + 4ch HDMI digital HD modulators.

This is how it is usually done in sports bars, gyms, hotels, MDU's

The beauty of that is that it is maintenance-free.

Once it's done and programmed, there is no maintenance required, and you will not need any STB's per TV.

The coax cables will be connected directly to the TV's tuners, initially scanning for cable channels, and each channel will display the corresponding HDMI source connected to the HDMI modulators.
You can change them just by using individual TV's remote control.

Please check this application example drawing:

For 10-12channels you can use:
H-THUNDER-4 combined with

H-THUNDER-8
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-4-or-8-hdmi-digital-rf-encoder-modulator-8230.html/239

We can preset all the channels before shipping, so the installation time would be very efficient.
Please review the solution, and let me know if that would work for you
