We are a small CATV/ISP in Northwest Pa. We are having an issue with a particular receiver (media kind) which delivers HLN, CNN, TBS, TNT, and TCM.

We have existing drake qam modulators, varying models, that take the ASI input and place the chosen stream onto an rf channel on our plant. The issue we are having is it appears the ASI data stream is to large for our qam modulators and we are experiencing buffer overflows resulting in pre BER errors. I have no means for adjusting the ASI data stream in this receiver as it is controlled by the Turner group or whomever they call themselves today.

You have an ASI to QAM modulator listed on your site. Is it possible to obtain a demo unit, or get a unit and return if it doesn’t resolve our problem, to test and confirm it will work?

If it is MPTS, what is the ASI bit rate? Our ASI-to-QAM modulator can generate up to 4 physical QAM channels.

One 256-QAM channel can carry up to 38 Mbps, so if multiple transport streams are multiplexed on the ASI input, we can distribute them across four different RF frequencies.

The ASI does have MPTS. We have five transport streams available on ASI output. I can configure up to 3 ASI outputs but cannot select specific TS to show on specific ports. All five on each ASI port.

I cannot see what the ASI bit rate is out of this receiver.

One 256-QAM channel can carry up to 38 Mbps, so if multiple transport streams are multiplexed on the ASI input, we can distribute them across four different RF frequencies.

We have found that if we keep the QAM channel at or below 34Mbps, the crappy tv’s on our network will work fine. As of now we pick four of the five TS on one QAM RF channel and mux the fifth TS onto another QAM RF Channel. Having the one Modulator output multiple QAM channels is a benefit as we can split the five across two QAM channels and assure we keep the QAM data rates well below our 34mb mark.

Lastly – It feels like the asi stream bit rate is too high for the drake MQM and MQL modulators we have. The buffer max’s out. I also have an old cisco qam modulator we use for testing and there is an overflow error which leads to a higher ASI rate than they can process.
