Introduction

Based on the application you described, below is a clear overview of how a hospital-wide IPTV and RF video distribution system can be built using Thor Broadcast equipment.
This solution is designed for facilities that currently use QAM/RF over coax but want a practical path toward IP multicast / IPTV distribution across a larger healthcare network.

Why this architecture works

The system allows the main hospital to generate one or more internal channels, distribute them as IP multicast streams over the hospital fiber network, and then either:
1. Deliver the stream directly to IPTV endpoints, or
2. Convert the multicast back into QAM RF channels for remote facilities still using coaxial TV distribution.
This makes it ideal for hospitals that need a hybrid RF + IPTV solution during a phased migration.

Application overview

Main Hospital: Internally produced HDMI content is connected to a Thor encoder/modulator.
Network Backbone: The video is distributed over the hospital’s existing fiber/data network as multicast IP.
Satellite Facilities: The stream can be displayed as IPTV or converted into RF QAM channels for local coaxial distribution.

Recommended Thor Broadcast products

1) HDMI to QAM RF + IPTV Encoder / Modulator
Best choice for the source location when you want to generate both:
• a local RF QAM channel for existing coax systems
• an IPTV multicast stream for network distribution

2) IP UDP Multicast to 4-Channel CATV RF QAM / ATSC Modulator
Best choice for remote hospitals or satellite locations that still need to place IP video streams onto a local RF coaxial television system.
This unit receives multicast IP streams and converts them directly into RF channels for distribution over the facility’s coax network.

Example signal flow

Produced HDMI Content  →  Thor HDMI Encoder / Modulator  →  IP Multicast over Hospital Fiber Network  →  Remote IPTV Viewing
or

Educational notes for the hospital IT / AV team

Multicast distribution: Multicast is the correct method when the same content needs to be shown in many facilities without creating unnecessary duplicate streams.
Hybrid migration path: Hospitals do not need to abandon RF immediately. They can continue using QAM channels where needed while gradually enabling IPTV across newer areas.
Scalability: The same architecture can start with one internal channel and later expand to multiple channels for patient information, staff communication, digital signage, training, or hospital network programming.
Centralized control: The main source location can originate the content once and deliver it to many hospitals, clinics, and offices across the network.

Main advantages of this solution

• Supports both existing RF coax systems and future IPTV expansion
• Ideal for hospital campuses, satellite hospitals, clinics, and medical office groups
• Uses multicast streaming for efficient video delivery over the network
• Allows internal TV channels for patient information, staff communication, emergency messaging, and facility branding
• Provides a practical way to distribute video over fiber network infrastructure and coaxial RF networks

Information to confirm for final system design

• Are all facilities connected through the same managed network or linked through dedicated fiber?
• Does the network support multicast / IGMP?
• How many channels are needed initially, and what is the expected future channel count?
• Which facilities still require RF/QAM output, and which are ready for IPTV-only delivery?
