RF Audio Over Fiber Extender | Wireless Microphone Fiber System | Thor Broadcast

RF Audio Over Fiber Extender – Wireless Microphone & RF Distribution over Fiber

The Thor Broadcast F-RF-AUDIO-TxRx is a professional RF over Fiber (RFoF) system designed to transport wireless microphone, IF, and RF signals over long distances using single-mode fiber.

This system converts RF signals into optical signals (1550nm), enabling ultra-low loss transmission over distances exceeding 10 km+ without degradation, noise pickup, or signal attenuation typical of coaxial cables.

How RF Over Fiber Works (Simplified)

Traditional RF distribution using coax cables suffers from signal loss, interference, and limited distance. The Thor RFoF system solves this by converting RF into light:

  • RF Input → Converted to Optical Signal (1310nm)
  • Optical Signal → Transmitted over Fiber
  • Receiver → Converts Optical back to RF

This process preserves signal integrity while eliminating RF noise, EMI interference, and long-distance attenuation.

Unlike copper systems, fiber transmission maintains consistent signal quality regardless of distance, making it ideal for critical broadcast and wireless audio applications.

Designed for Wireless Audio & RF Applications

This system is optimized for frequency bands commonly used in professional wireless audio systems:

  • 516 – 698 MHz (UHF wireless microphones)
  • 925 – 937.5 MHz (IF / specialty RF bands)

It allows remote placement of antennas while keeping receivers in a controlled environment, improving signal reliability and reducing interference.

Why Use Fiber Instead of Coax for RF Audio & Wireless Systems? (Expanded Applications Guide)

The Problem with Traditional Coax Systems

In real-world deployments, coax cable becomes a major limitation very quickly — especially in professional environments like stadiums, broadcast facilities, or large venues.

Even though coax works for short runs, once you go beyond ~50–100 meters:

  • Signal levels drop significantly
  • Noise and interference increase
  • Amplifiers and distribution systems become complex and expensive
  • Troubleshooting becomes difficult and unreliable

This is where RF over Fiber (RFoF) becomes a game-changing solution.

Fiber vs Coax — Real Engineering Differences

Feature Coax Cable Fiber Optic
Distance Limited (~100m practical) 1km+ (easily extendable)
Signal Loss High (frequency dependent) Near-zero over long distance
Interference Susceptible (EMI/RFI) Immune
Weight Heavy, bulky Lightweight
Scalability Complex Very simple

Deep Dive — What This Means in Real Applications

1. Stadium & Live Event Wireless Microphones

Problem (Coax):

  • Wireless mic antennas placed far from receivers
  • Long coax runs → signal loss + noise
  • RF dropouts during live events (VERY bad)

Fiber Solution:

  • Place antennas close to performers
  • Run fiber back to control room
  • Maintain clean, stable RF signal

Result:

  • No dropouts
  • Better RF coverage
  • Professional broadcast reliability

 2. Large Venues (Churches, Theaters, Convention Centers)

Problem (Coax):

  • Multiple antenna zones
  • Complex splitter/amplifier chains
  • Signal imbalance across system

Fiber Solution:

  • Centralized RF routing over fiber
  • Clean distribution across zones
  • No need for cascaded RF amplifiers

Result:

  • Simplified system design
  • Lower installation cost long-term
  • Much easier troubleshooting

3. Broadcast Studios & Production Facilities

Problem (Coax):

  • RF noise from studio equipment
  • Ground loops and interference
  • Limited flexibility in antenna placement

Fiber Solution:

  • Full electrical isolation
  • RF stays clean (no EMI contamination)
  • Antennas can be placed outside or on roof

Result:

  • Cleaner signal chain
  • Higher production quality
  • Reduced RF troubleshooting

4. Remote Antenna Systems (RAS)

Problem (Coax):

  • Long outdoor coax runs = huge signal loss
  • Weather exposure issues
  • Expensive low-loss coax required

Fiber Solution:

  • Fiber runs hundreds of meters or kilometers
  • No signal degradation
  • Ideal for rooftop / tower antennas

 Result:

  • Maximum RF signal integrity
  • Reliable long-distance deployment
  • Lower infrastructure cost

. Mobile Broadcast & Temporary Installations

Problem (Coax):

  • Heavy cable runs
  • Difficult to deploy quickly
  • Signal varies with cable quality

Fiber Solution:

  • Lightweight fiber cables
  • Fast deployment
  • Consistent performance

Result:

  • Faster setup time
  • More portable systems
  • Ideal for events and rentals

6. RF Engineering Insight (Why Fiber Wins)

Coax Loss Example:

At ~600 MHz:

  • RG-6: ~6–8 dB loss per 100m
  • Over 300m → ~20 dB loss (huge)

That means:
You are basically destroying your signal

Fiber Advantage:

  • Optical loss: ~0.3–0.4 dB per km
  • Practically no RF degradation

That’s why fiber feels like a “perfect cable”

7. System Simplicity Comparison

Coax-Based System:

  • Antennas
  • RF amplifiers
  • Splitters
  • Equalizers
  • Long coax runs

Complex, expensive, failure-prone

Fiber-Based System:

  • RF TX → Fiber → RX

Clean, simple, reliable

Cost Reality

At first glance:

  • Fiber system = higher upfront cost

But in real deployments:

Fewer amplifiers
Less troubleshooting
Longer lifespan
Better performance

Total system cost is often LOWER

When Should You Use RF Over Fiber?

You should strongly consider fiber when:

  • Distance > 50–100 meters
  • Critical RF reliability required
  • High-value events or broadcast
  • Multi-zone RF distribution
  • EMI/noise environment
