IPTV distribution over LAN most of the time utilizes UDP or RTP Multicast protocol because it allows point-to-multipoint video & audio distribution. This protocol allows smart IP broadcast over a LAN, essentially any IP device can receive that encoded MPEG TS stream generated by the IPTV encoders. 
As an example, you can receive those streams on Smart TV's equipped with a UDP decoding application or software; on PCs and most popular app is VLC player, but using PC's are very inconvenient when we want to convert those to an HDMI output so you can display them on the TV's or Monitors on the network. UDP multicast is useful for applications that need to send data to a large number of recipients simultaneously, such as video streaming or online gaming. It allows for efficient transmission of data by eliminating the need for the sender to send separate packets to each recipient.

Video over IP HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) is a method of transmitting video data over an IP network using the HLS protocol. HLS is a streaming protocol that breaks the video content into small segments and transmits them over the internet using HTTP.

To transmit video over IP HLS, the sender encodes the video content into HLS format and sends it to a server. The server then transmits the video segments to the recipients over the internet.

Recipients can access the video content by using an HLS-compatible player, such as a media player or web browser, and connecting to the server using the video's URL. The player retrieves the video segments from the server and plays them back in sequence, providing a seamless streaming experience.

UDP multicast is a method of sending data packets to multiple destinations simultaneously on a network. It is used in applications where data needs to be distributed to many recipients without requiring each recipient to establish a separate connection to the sender.

In the context of video over IP LAN distribution, UDP multicast can be used to efficiently transmit video data to multiple viewers on a local area network using the IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) protocol. IGMP is used by routers to learn which hosts are interested in receiving multicast traffic and to forward multicast traffic only to those hosts that have expressed interest.

To use UDP multicast with IGMP for video over IP LAN distribution, the following steps need to be followed:

  1. The sender (or server) sends the video data to a multicast address, which is a specially reserved IP address for multicast traffic. For example, the multicast address is commonly used for local network multicast traffic.

  2. The receivers (or clients) need to join the multicast group by subscribing to the same multicast address. This is done using the IGMP protocol. The clients send an IGMP join message to the router, indicating that they want to receive traffic for a specific multicast group.

  3. The router receives the IGMP join messages from the clients and forwards the multicast traffic to the interested clients only. This helps to conserve network bandwidth and prevents unnecessary traffic from being sent to hosts that are not interested in receiving it.

  4. The clients receive the multicast traffic and decode it to display the video on their screens.

To use UDP multicast with IGMP for video over IP LAN distribution, you need to ensure that your network supports multicast traffic and that your devices are properly configured to send and receive multicast traffic using the IGMP protocol.
