Description

Integrated Receiver Decoder Model V2

This IRD was replaced by a more advanced version:

Thor Broadcast Satellite or ATSC H-IRD-V3 - RF, IP, ASI input - HD SD SDI, ASI and IP Output

Thor Broadcast Satellite or ATSC H-IRD-V3 - RF, IP, ASI input - HD SD SDI, ASI and IP output

The Thor Broadcast H-IRD Integrated Receiver Decoder is a professional-quality broadcast receiver and decoder used for decoding MPEG2 or MPEG4 transport streams. The unit features professional-quality outputs with the following formats: HDMI, YPbPr, CVBS, HD-SDI, or IP. The ability to receive and rebroadcast IP streams is a unique feature of the Thor H-IRD. The Thor IRD is able to receive many different signal standards and offers the majority of the most common output formats. The unit is able to decode both MPEG2 and MPEG4 transport streams, and features HDMI output. This unit is also able to decode DVB-C/T signals, making it ideal for worldwide projects. The IRD's 9-port IP board allows an incoming IP stream to be decoded and then rebroadcast to up to 9 other IP addresses, making the unit ideal for future IP integration. The V2 model of Thor's H-HD-IRD line is a tried and true broadcast decoder with hundreds of applications in the digital headend.

Features

- Receives and decodes both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 streams

- Compatible with a wide variety of standards, such as DVB-S/S2/T/C, ASI, or IP

- Provides 2 common interfaces for simultaneously decoding multiple channels

- Wide range of outputs: HDMI, YPbPr, CVBS, HD/SD-SDI, or IP

- Supports multi-channel IP unicast and multicast (SPTS outputs for IPTV)

- Supports Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction

- Offers network management and supports SNMP

Question and Answers

Question:
Quick question: can a Thor HD-IRD-V3-ATSC decode an RTSP stream?

Answer:
The V3 IRD will only decode UDP/RTP streams. We do have a compact IP decoder that outputs HDMI. This unit will take RTSP, RTMP. https://thorbroadcast.com/product/4k-hevc-ip-and-usb-hd-video-decoder-ip-8230.html The NVS-3500 can also decode RTSP, RTMP. https://thorbroadcast.com/product/3g-sdi-hdmi-1080p50-60-streaming-video-server-encoder-client-8230.html Or you can let us know what your application is, and I can see what else fits the bill better. Are you going to use LAN or WAN for IP transport?

Question:
If I am using a pair of H-1SDI-QAM-IPLL Encoder and H-IRD-V3 decoder units to send video over the public internet, does the encoder need a static IP or just the decoder?

Answer:
Yes, both the encoder and decoder should have static IPs so you can log in to them when necessary. But it doesn't have to be a static WAN IP address; it can be the LAN static IP address, and basically the encoder sends the IP stream to the router WAN IP address with the specific port, and the router sends it to the decoder LAN IP address. Please let me know if this is clear.

Question:
Do we have the ability to remove the PTS compliance from the IRD we purchased? If so, do we have single-stream control over that? What I mean is: for each output, can we dictate the PTS compliance? If so, it would further reduce our latency, which is our main priority. Alternatively, is there anything else that we can adjust to reduce latency?

Answer:
Please find the answers to your questions regarding latency reduction for the H-IRD-V3-ATSC-2 below: 1. Can PTS compliance be removed? No. PTS (Presentation Time Stamp) is an essential part of the MPEG transport stream timing model. The IRD must follow PTS/DTS timing to maintain audio/video synchronization, prevent buffer issues, and ensure decoder stability. 2. Is there per-output (per-stream) PTS control? No, this is not a configurable option. 3. Is there anything else that can be adjusted to reduce latency? Since latency is your priority, we recommend adjusting the following settings on your encoder side: - Reduce GOP size: Using a smaller GOP (e.g., 12-15 instead of 60) will lower latency. We recommend using IP or IBP instead of long GOP. - Disable B-frames: Setting B-frames to 0 reduces decode delay, though there is a slight tradeoff in compression efficiency. - Use CBR + stable PCR: A cleaner stream requires less buffering from the IRD.
