Introduction

Modern marina, harbor, campus, and hospitality environments require reliable high-speed internet across large distances. Traditional coax-only networks become difficult to manage due to signal loss, noise, and amplification requirements.

The solution is to combine:

  • CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System)
  • DOCSIS protocol
  • RF over fiber transport
This architecture keeps the simplicity of coax while leveraging fiber for distance, stability, and scalability.

What is CMTS?

CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) is the central controller of a cable modem network.

It performs:

  • Communication with all cable modems
  • Bandwidth allocation
  • Timing synchronization
  • Upstream scheduling
  • Signal level control

The CMTS is essentially the “brain” of the system.

What is DOCSIS?

DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) defines how data is transmitted over RF cable systems.

It includes:

  • Modulation methods (QAM, QPSK)
  • Channel structure
  • Error correction
  • Timing and synchronization
  • Upstream scheduling

How 1000 Cable Modems Work on One Network

At first, it seems impossible for hundreds of modems to share one RF network.

The key: modems DO NOT transmit at the same time.

Upstream Uses Time Division

The upstream channel is divided into microsecond time slots.

  • Modem A transmits
  • Then Modem B
  • Then Modem C

This is called Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA).

Real Example

If 500 modems exist:

  • Only a small % transmit at any moment
  • Each gets a time slot
  • CMTS schedules everything

Timing and Synchronization

Ranging

Each modem is calibrated for distance.

CMTS ensures all signals arrive at the correct time.

Power Control

  • Far modem → higher power
  • Close modem → lower power

Burst Transmission

Modems send short RF bursts only during assigned windows.

No overlap = no interference

How Data is Converted

  1. Ethernet enters modem
  2. Converted to DOCSIS frames
  3. Waits for time slot
  4. Transmitted as RF burst

RF Over Fiber Architecture

CMTS + H-THUNDER-8 │ ▼ RF Combiner │ ▼ F-RF-1310-TX │ ▼ Splitter (1x8) │ ▼ Mini Nodes │ ▼ Cable Modems / TVs RETURN: Modem → Node → Fiber → Receiver → CMTS

Each node uses:

  • 1 forward fiber
  • 1 return fiber

Forward RF Source – H-THUNDER-8

RF signals can be generated by:

  • CMTS (internet)
  • H-THUNDER-8 Modulator

The H-THUNDER-8 converts HDMI into RF channels (QAM/ATSC).

Example Use Case

  • TV channels to boats
  • Security cameras
  • Info channels
One RF system = Internet + TV

Example BOM – 8 Nodes

Why Fiber is Better Than Coax

  • No distance limitations
  • No signal degradation
  • No amplifier cascade
  • Cleaner return path
  • Easy scaling

Conclusion

DOCSIS works because of timing and control.

RF over fiber works because it preserves that behavior while improving distance and quality.

This is the most scalable way to deliver internet and TV over large properties.
