Question and Answers

Question:
Do you have systems for sending some 3G-SDI (SMPTE 424M) for Optic line?

Answer:
We have a lot of 3G SDI products to choose. Every products on this page is 3G-SDI, we also have single channel compact throwdown kits available as well. https://thorbroadcast.com/products/sdi-sd-hd-3g-with-cwdm Please let me know how many 3G-SDI signals you want to transmit over a single fiber and we'll quote you on it right away.

Question:
greetings -we're an AV design/build contractor and have a jobsite where we installed the Kramer 673R/T kit for use with 3 projectors and 1 TV and have been having some problems that they are either unable or unwilling to solve.

the system layout is pretty simple. Church w/ a BMD ATEM2 M/E switcher as the video hub. Inputs are 2 computers - one iMac running ProPresenter, one Dell running PPT, 3 Sony PTZ cameras (coming in on another Kramer kit).

Install was completed last fall. There's a strange phenomena that started late in 2016 where certain ProP slides would make the projector/TV feeds blackout temporarily as if losing sync or something. Not all at once...just one then another, etc...

Customer found, rather accidentally, that if they added a filter in PP that was basically a small black border around the slides it would be fine. We've tried everything but cannot make the problem go away and their engineers seem to not be even trying so i'm looking for alternatives.

Your kit seems to be the same functionality - single mode fiber w/ SC connectors carrying 4 SDI signals. Your website reads "ST/PC" fiber - if that's a different connector from our SC then i can order some or maybe find an adaptor/converter.

The projectors are Sony lasers and all have Decimators on them, the TV is simple but also has a Decimator. If we bypass the Kramer w/ a long SDI the projector works perfectly. The problem is the conduit's not big enough for 4 SDI's so fiber is a must. The fiber run is under 200' and the SDIs are under 100' so we're nowhere near any tolerance. And it's not silly 4K or anything like that.

I'm interested in your perspective on the situation and possibly obtaining a unit to try.

Answer:
I have my suspicions of what it is.To prove it I suggest getting 2 units for attempting to find the resolution.

We have 2 different technologies for multiplexing SDI and other signals.
Inexpensive TDM, we use only one laser, but it has limitations.
F-4MSDI-TX/RX 4 ch SDI over the single fiber - $2495 for TX/RX kit
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/4-sdi-hdsdi-over-1-fiber-mini-extender.html

CWDM -Optical multiplexing, we can multiplex anything on the separate optical wavelengths.
F-4SDI-3GTX/RX  4 ch SDI over the single-fiber  -CWDM
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/4-ch-sd-hd-3g-sdi-over-single-fiber-cwdm-uncompressed-rack-mountable.html

but we have currently only have 8ch in stock: (i will send you 8ch for checking)
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/8-ch-sd-hd-3g-sdi-over-single-fiber-cwdm-uncompressed-rack-mountable.html

if you want to try it, please send us a PO and CC for holding, and we will be glad to send you a unit for testing and approval

Question:

Can your 3G SDI support 3GSDI 1080p/60 Level B?  3G-A SDI and 3G-B ,  Will it work with Blackmagic ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K

Answer:

Yes our devices is transparent and can send any SDI signal over fiber up to 3GSDI

Within this standard, there are three formats known as Level A, Level B
Dual Link (B-DL) and Level B Dual Stream (B-DS). The Level A format is
the direct mapping of uncompressed 1080p (up to 60 fps) video into a
the serial digital interface at the nominal 3 Gbit/s. The Level B-DL
the format is the mapping of dual-link HD-SDI/SMPTE 372M (i.e.: 1080p up
to 60 fps) in a single serial digital interface at the nominal 3
Gbit/s. The Level B-DS format is the dual-stream carriage of two
independent HD-SDI/SMPTE 292M signals (720p up to 60 fps or
1080i/1080p up to 30 fps) in a single serial digital interface at the
nominal 3 Gbit/s

Question:

I’m working n a new opportunity.

The customer is our provincial legislature down here called Assemblée Nationale.

They need to carry HD-SDI video signals over a pair of single mode fibers.

They need to carry 10 signals in one sense and 4 in the other one.

They are looking for a CDWM solution.

They told me they have some fibers with LC connectors and some with ST connectors.

They want to have redundant power supplies.

I checked on the WEB site and I think there could be 2 possible solutions.

1) 2 x F-8SDI-3G-TX/RX-RM kits

2) F-16SDI-TX/Rx chassis type of solution

Please would it be possible to provide me with a quote as soon as possible?

Answer:

Your best bet is to go with the first unit you mentioned; those are very popular, very reliable and a very good price.

F-8SDI-3G-TX/RX-RM kits

Question:

I am looking to purchase one of these units. Can this be configured for 12 TX and 4 RX  and 1Gb  enet to 12RX and 4 TX  and 1 1Gigabit Ethernet in 1 or 2 RU frame….  with lc fiber connections? How many strands of fiber would I need to run this configuration and what would be the delivery time and cost of such a kit?

Answer:
We have only 8 slots available on 1U device,
We can do that on 2 or 3 fiber
What is the distance between those 2 locations ?
This is the most economical way over 3 fibers :
1 Unit 8SDI TX and 8 SDI RX ( one fiber )
2 Unit 4SDI TX + 4SDI RX, and 4SDI RX + 4 SDI TX  ( secound fiber)
3  1 Gigabit Ethernet over single fiber  ( third fiber)

We could do it using 2 fibers only, but it is more comlex.

This is the link to the F-SUPERMUX-8 , universal multiplication platform.
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-8-channel-flexible-hd-sdi-analog-video-audio-rs-data-etherent-8230.html
F-SUPERMUX-8

Question:

For a new quotation for one of our main customers I need price for:

  • 6 x 8-channel HD-SDI Fiber Optic Extender (Tx & Rx). Ref. F-8MSDI-TX/RX with the following options:

    • FC/PC connector
    • Single-mode up to 20Km
    • 3G-SDI option
    • 2-channel bidirectional audio board
    • 1 GbE board

The base model can transport two analogue balanced audio channels or it is necessary the audio board?

Answer:

The F-8MSDI-TX/RX can support HD-SDI up to 1080i/60, but we can not do
3GDI on it.
We can add 2 Bi-directional Audio card but it will take embedded audio
for the first 2 SDI inputs
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/8-sdi-hdsdi-over-1-fiber-optical-transmission-multiplexer.html

The F-8MSDI-ET-TX/RX is a 8 HDSDI + 10/100 Ethernet
We can add 2 Bi-directional Audio card but it will take embedded audio
for the first 2 SDI inputs
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/8-sd-hd-sdi-ethernet-over-single-fiber-transmission-kit.html

If you require 3G-SDI then we need to use CWDM mux.
F-8SDI-3G-TX/RX-RM
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/8-ch-sd-hd-3g-sdi-over-single-fiber-cwdm-uncompressed-rack-mountable.html

Or The F-SUPERMUX-8 , this unit can mux any 8 signals

We can not add Bidirectional Audio and Gbe both but the total can not
exide 8 , so 2 x for Bidirectional Audio, 1 for Gig ET and 5 for 3G
SDI
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-8-channel-flexible-hd-sdi-analog-video-audio-rs-data-etherent-8230.html

If the price matters, I would recommend going with 8 3G SDI
F-8SDI-3G-TX/RX-RM, and external GIG ET and Audio on the separate
devices and separate fibers.

Question:

I’m looking for a mini type convertor for a POV Camera, very likely a Lumix BS1H, and was wondering if you had a product that would give me the ability to send Gen Lock down to the camera and SDI video back up to our rack room.  Let me know if you have any gear that might do the trick.

Answer:

We do have solutions for both of those things, but not in one device.
So our solution would require you to purchase two different sets over 2 fibers.
Here are the links:

For SDI we have two options; up to HD-SDI and another for up to 3G-SDI
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-sdi-hdsdi-over-fiber-mini-extender.html
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-channel-sd-hd-3g-sdi-fiber-extender-1080p-60hz.html

For Gen Lock we have lots of customers use this product.
https://thorbroadcast.com/product/1-cvbs-video-only-over-fiber-tx-rx-kit.html

So if you don't mind using 2 sets over 2 fibers, then this will work out  great for you.
Let me know if you need a formal quote.

Question:

I need  frame synced inputs   Any suggestions ? Hoping to distribute 1080p 59.94 signals.

Answer:

he F-6 SDI-3G-TX supports SDI up to 3G SDI 1080p/59.94/60hz,

it uses 8 separate independent circuits and lasers to
convert electrical SDI signals into optical signals and back to
electrical signals on the receiving side. The 8 optical signals are
passively muxed and demuxed using CWDM. The circuits are completely
independent and fully transparent, so they work as a gateway.

If you need a synchronized signal, this device will not be able to
sync all the signals as they are independent of each other. The only
way to achieve synchronization is by using an external
synchronization.

Question:

I showed a customer your F-8SDI-3G-TXRX-RM and they are interested in 4 units.  They are asking this below before they could consider this unit.  Could you please review and advise?
Would like to Validate that these Support PsF format without any hiccups please.
We have had issues with some Electrical/Optical device with 23,98PsF in the past

Answer:
Those CWDM units we make are of the highest quality, both in parts, boards, and lasers we put in them. NASA uses them for launches and they're in every single NHL arena, plus hundreds of other places.
Not once have we ever received a complaint about them.
The CWDM models are 100% completely uncompressed. The raw video is literally converted to light and then back to copper, the signal data is untouched.

I can't say the same about models we make with TDM, which do compress the signal via time like the F-M8SDI-TxRx.

Those CWDM models should work perfect for the client. We have them in stock.
Also tell them we have a 30 day return policy, so if they don't like them, return them. However, that's never happened before either; I think they're some of the best performing models we make and your client should buy them right this second.

Question:

I'm looking at the Thor F-8-SDI-3G-TX/RX pairs what you have. Are these pairs guaranteed to transmit only one way? (i.e. the TX only has hardware for transmitting and the RX only has hardware for receiving?) Do you have documentation proving that one way data transfer?

I understand the high-level drawing shows 1 to 1 in out on both ends.

I want to propose this as a possible solution for passing video into a secure boundary.  To do that, I looking for a letter from manufacturer stating that it is impossible for info to back flow from the intended direction and hopefully a scientific component level diagram showing that by either the transmitting box having no physical receive connection or the mux showing that disconnect.

Answer:
Well there is plenty of information on our website about it.
I also attached the quick config guide that shows all the inputs are flowing to all the outputs.

The simpler explanation is these models for 3G-SDI are CWDM; which means every input has it's own optical laser, which then goes through a CWDM multiplexer that converts it for transport over glass.
The particular mux is what creates 8 in 8 out on both ends; otherwise you would need specific Muxes for 6 up 2 down or 4 up and 4 down.
So technically it's impossible just because of the mux that comes inside the unit.

Let me know if you need something more scientific, I could ask someone in the lab to make up a drawing if that'll help, but it'll be similar to the one on the website.

Our product, the Thor Fiber F-8SDI-3G-CWDM-TX/RX, is a UNIDIRECTIONAL :

8-channel SDI over fiber transmitter (F-8SDI-3G-CWDM-TX)

and an  8-channel 3G SDI receiver (F-8SDI-3G-CWDM-RX).

The transmitter (TX) contains 8 individual CWDM lasers and functions as an 8 x SDI electrical-to-optical converter. Each of the 8 channels is converted to a unique optical wavelength using modulated light. The transmitter (TX) does not have any optical detectors for optical-to-electrical conversion.

On the other hand, the receiver (RX) is equipped with 8 individual photodetectors, allowing it to detect the 8 unique optical wavelengths generated by the transmitter and convert them back into 3G SDI electrical signals. The receiver (RX) does not contain any lasers, which means it cannot send any electrical or optical signal back to the transmitter.

Based on the technology used, we affirm that it is physically impossible for the receiver to send any signal back to the transmitter. The system only allows for transmission from the transmitter to the receiver, making this unit a "fiber break" secure converter suitable for military or government use.

Question:

We are looking for an HDMI to Fiber Converter and a Fiber to HDMI solution. Specifically, we require equipment that has 6 HDMI ports for conversion to fiber, and on the receiving end, we need a converter that will convert the fiber back to 6 HDMI ports.

If you have this product available, could you please provide us with the price and a datasheet for the equipment?

Answer:
Unfortunately, we do not have such a product, and I do not believe this product exists on the market.
We only have a 1-to-1 HDMI over fiber set available, so you would need 6 TX/RX kits over 6 fibers.
