4k SDI - Best Solutions

4K resolution, also called 4K, denotes a horizontal image resolution in the order of 4,000 pixels. In most cases, the image resolution has a value of around eight megapixels. The value "4K" does not indicate which brightness and color values are coded in the images.

Appliances

Digital displaying devices, such as computer monitors, monitors, televisions or projectors, as well as recording devices, such as digital cinema cameras or digital cameras, with a column number of 4000 columns or more can be marked with the attribute "4K". This makes it clear that these devices are able to process images with this column number completely without having to combine pixels (down sampling). Images with lower image resolution can be displayed in full format on ultra-high resolution playback devices using up sampling or, as in the case of Full HD, TV line doublers.
Picture formats
The abbreviation 4K is also frequently used for various purposes for the collection, storage and transmission of image data:

  • For an ultra-high resolution video format
  • For an ultra-high-resolution television transmission format, i.e. Ultra High Definition Television.
  • For the ultra-high resolutions used in the production of 2K und 4K2K cinema films.

The Serial Digital Interface (SDI) is primarily used for the transmission of uncompressed and unencrypted video data via coaxial cable or fiber optic. It is mainly used in the field of professional television studios and television broadcasters. The SDI interface is specified by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and represents a further development of analog video standards such as PAL and NTSC method. The HD-SDI extension according to the SMPTE 292M standard is currently the predominant connection for the transmission of uncompressed picture signals for HD, digital intermediate and digital cinema in the studio and production environment. Picture, sound and metadata can be transmitted over all HD-SDI connections. HD-SDI, like SDI in general, is mainly found in professional video devices, for consumers interfaces of lower performance have established themselves. HD-SDI devices are usually only found in studios, rental houses and cinemas. A relatively new field of application is video surveillance systems, where this standard can be used to transmit images from special HD cameras over existing coaxial cable installations. HD-SDI thus enables high-resolution images in this sector without a complete conversion to IP video.
