SDI and Coax Basic Information

The increasing popularity of SDI signal caused an increased demand of audio/video installers for converters and encoders of SDI signals as well as devices for transmitting these signals. The ability to send with coaxial cable over 100m (HD SDI signal), or 300m (SD SDI signal) video signal along with embedded audio, no troublesome HDCP security and growing number of inexpensive devices processing these signals causes the use of the SDI standard even on the CCTV market. The differences in the high resolution SDI converter available on the market relate mainly to the capabilities of HD-SDI (720p / 1080i) and 3G-SDI (1080p) signals. 

Coaxial (uniaxial) is the term used in the geometry for matching axes of rotation of three-dimensional elements. For example, a coaxial cable consists of a center conductor and the surrounding (coaxial) shielding. The coaxial cable is different from other shield cables because the dimensions of the cables are controlled to provide a precise, constant gap between the conductors, which is necessary for efficient operation as a transmission duct. The advantage of the coaxial design is that the electric and magnetic fields are limited to a dielectric with little leakage outside the shield. However, on the outside of the cable, the magnetic and electric fields are largely protected against interference of the signals inside the cable. Cables with larger diameters and cables with multiple covers have less leakage (losses). Thanks to this feature, the coaxial cable is a good choice for carrying weak, and very dense digital signals that cannot tolerate interference from the environment or stronger electrical signals, when it is not allowed to emit radiation or coupling with neighboring structures or circuits.

 

The coaxial cable is used as a transmission pipe for radio frequency signals. One of the advantages of using a coaxial cable compared to other types of radio transmission lines is that in the case of an ideal coaxial cable, the electromagnetic field carrying the signal exists only in the space between the internal and external wires.

Thanks to this feature, the coaxial cable can be used next to metal objects without power losses occurring in other types of transmission solutions. What's more, the coaxial cable ensures protection of the signal against external electromagnetic interference.

Thanks to its construction, coaxial cables are more resistant to interference in relation to symmetrical cables. They are used to transmit sinusoidal and digital signals in the range of 20 Hz - 15 GHz.

  • low-power transmission and transmission antenna installations (up to several dozen watts), waveguides are used for higher powers due to its smaller losses;
  • cable television;
  • cctv industrial television;
  • installations of satellite antennas;
  • computer networks (Ethernet (e.g. 10BASE5) with speeds up to 10 Mb / s);
  • Internet access in DOCSIS technology (modem connected to the subscriber outlet);
